As skills develop and grow, this place (termed “zone of proximal development” by Lev Vygotsky) will shift.

Keeping the instruction within the correct zone needed for learning to occur requires ongoing informal assessment that occurs throughout the teaching process.

Whichever term is used, what is the goal?

The goal is to help students throughout the learning process.

Educational therapy is an intensive process of teaching and learning designed to meet each child’s individual needs.

Educational therapy is a process that combines an understanding of how individuals learn, the ways in which feelings can impact learning, and knowledge of specialized teaching methods. Through skilled assessment, case management, and alternative teaching methods, educational therapy empowers children and adults with learning disabilities and other learning challenges to learn and develop optimally.

Educational Therapy:

is individualized and tailored to each individual student’s needs

is helpful for all types of learning problems, including dyslexia

teaches students to become self-directed

addresses neurological underpinnings of learning problems

is based on brain research

focuses on the process of “learning to learn”

develops intrinsic motivation and confidence

employs extensive questioning, not merely “teaching”

addresses areas of deficits to turn weaknesses into strengths

teaches students to “think about thinking” (metacognition)
